Game Day – Charlotte at Norfolk

Welcome to the first game preview of the 2011/12 season!  It’s been a long time coming since last May!

After facing the Norfolk Admirals 12 times last season (7-3-0-2), the Charlotte Checkers will meet the Ads tonight for their first of eight contests, the same number of times the Checkers will face their Midwest division rivals, and the Oklahoma City Barons.  In Norfolk last season, the Checkers were 5-0-1.

Former Norfolk Captain Chris Durno will be making his Checkers debut, alongside Blueliner Mathieu Roy, who also spent time in Virginia last season.  There are no former Checkers in Norfolk.

Players to watch:  

  • Drayson Bowman had 26 PIM vs. Norfolk last season. (Photo - J. Propst)

    Coach Jeff Daniels has said Mike Murphy and Justin Peters will split the games this weekend.  Last year, Murphy’s record against Norfolk was 1-0-1.

  • In just seven appearances vs. Norfolk, Jon Matsumoto had 8 points (4G, 4A) and a +3 rating.
  • Chris Terry appeared in all 12 games vs. Norfolk, and had 9 points (4G, 5A).
  • Drayson Bowman and Jerome Samson each had 8 points, and Zach Boychuck averaged a point per game in his 7 appearances (2G, 5A) and a +4 rating.
  • New Checkers Captain Brett Sutter leads the team with 37 PIM against Norfolk last season.  Drayson Bowman had 26 PIM, and following close behind him is Nicolas Blanchard, who had 25 PIM against Norfolk.

    • Unfortunately, no. It’s a six hour drive (each way) and I have a master’s thesis to work on, and a busy work schedule. Life has to come first this weekend, even though I’d love to be at the games!
