The one about what the Checkers have been up to this summer.

Quick Hits – Player and team updates:

  • Zac Dalpe spent last weekend at the Brantford Hockey Fest, and participated in the Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament
  • This article about the Street Hockey Tournament referred to Dalpe as an NHL great!
  • Hearing that the Checkers will be hosting another NHL draft party.  As a new season ticket holder, last summer’s party was my first interaction with the AHL Checkers, and it was a great time.  This year’s draft is going to be June 24-25 in Minnesota.  More details as I hear about them!
  • In case you want to try out, the Checkers are auditioning new Checkmates in August
  • There are only 110 days until the Carolina CheckerCanes play the Winnipeg Thrashers in Charlotte!
  • The RecZone, the Hurricanes practice facility in Raleigh closed their doors last week due to bank foreclosure.  I never visited the RecZone, but it’s a facility not unlike the Xtreme Ice Center in Indian Trail.  The Hurricanes have secured ice time in Wake Forest next month for their prospect and conditioning camp, but I think it would be fantastic for them to have prospect camp here in Charlotte at the Checkers facility!  Can we start a petition for this?  Since many prospects will eventually see time with the Checkers, it would be a perfect chance for them to experience our fine city ahead of time!
  • Hockey’s Future (a prospect site and home to the best message boards in hockey, rated our Hurricanes prospects.  Some stuff I agree with, some not so much…
  • Still working on finding “proof” on this, but I’m hearing Chris “Terryiffic” Terry and Jared Staal are doing the Gary Roberts workout program this summer.  If so, the results may be mind blowing.  (And sad to this Terry fan, cause it might mean he’s with the big squad in Raleigh, and not with MY Checkers team!)
  • Although it’s unlikely either will appear in Checkers uniforms due to their European contracts and transfer clauses, Paul Branecky of the Hurricanes wrote an interesting piece on the two latest Hurricanes signings, Mattias Lindstrom and Tommi Kivisto
