This is my first attempt at a hockey blog. I’ve read plenty of them…. from the PensBlog to team blogs across the NHL. Since the AHL Checkers came to town, I’ve thought we needed a blog that followed the team. I’ve scoured the interwebs, and either I missed it, or one doesn’t exist. So here I am, doing what I do best, ranting and raving (hopefully more of the latter than former!) about my favorite team in Professional sports, the Charlotte Checkers.
Charlotte is so lucky to have this team…. one brimming with amazing talent, and a front office that is tied to another great organization in Raleigh. Charlotte is a great market, but a tough one, too. Sure, we’ve had hockey for years and years, but it was never a true developmental league like the AHL is. There was less of a likelihood of seeing guys continue on to the NHL, and to be honest, the level of play and on-ice talent just wasn’t great compared to that of our current team. One of the hardest things here is how fickle Charlotte sports fans are. We loved the Hornets of the late 1980’s and early 90’s, but the Bobcats have received lackluster support. The Panthers don’t get local fans unless they are winning, which in recent years, they haven’t been doing.
I think, for the first time in a long time, we’ve got the chance to show our city how great hockey is, and that it’s a sport to be reckoned with. I’m excited to see our season continue, and see how far into the post season we can make it.
So… here we go…
